Diagnosis/Consultation

Sam Hill Tree Care will send an ISA Certified Arborist to examine and diagnose the current conditions of your property and trees. Many factors come into play regarding the health of your trees including soil conditions, landscape maintenance practices, insects and diseases, irrigation scheduling, and site history.

Once we have gathered the necessary information, we create a treatment program for your unique situation.

Pruning

Pruning is the careful selective removal of limbs from your trees. There are a number of reasons to prune trees. Whatever the reason, Sam Hill Tree Care believes that pruning should augment the natural growth characteristics of the species. We can remove large and dangerous deadwood or provide detailed thinning and shaping. Some reasons for pruning include:

  • Removal of dead or diseased wood
  • Removal of mistletoe
  • Re-cut broken or stubbed limbs
  • Correct conflicting or crossing limbs
  • Weight reduction of limb ends to minimize chances of breakage
  • Thinning to allow for light infiltration for plantings beneath and to allow for air infiltration to minimize incidence of insect and disease problems
  • Crown reduction and/or shaping

Insect and Disease Management

Sam Hill Tree Care specializes in two types of insect and disease management:  proactive and reactive. We can provide a proactive plan of targeted applications to protect trees from becoming infested, and we can also provide quick solutions to existing problem areas. During regular visits, our arborists will point out possible problem areas before they come to fruition. The key to preventative health care in the landscape is maintaining vigorous pest and disease resistant trees.

Cabling and Bracing

In spite of their sturdy appearance, some trees occasionally need some supplemental support. These trees may have structural defects or conditions that increase the likelihood of failure of limbs, trunks or entire trees. This failure could lead to injury or property damage. Sam Hill Tree Care can evaluate your tree and determine if cabling and/or bracing could safely reduce the risk and preserve the tree.

Fertilization

Fertile soil is crucial to the health of your trees. However, many urban soils are deficient in essential nutrients due to construction activities, removal of leaf litter and/or tie-up with soil contaminants. On the other hand, many trees receive improper amounts of some nutrients, fostering excessive growth that is prone to certain insect and disease outbreaks. We can create a soil fertility program for you trees to correct deficiencies, maintain tree health or even to promote moderate growth.

Tree and Stump Removal

At some point, due to location or condition, some trees need to be removed. Sam Hill Tree Care specializes in removing trees in restricted locations due to buildings or other obstructions and will also remove the stumps if desired.

Tree Preservation

Tree preservation is the art of protecting valuable landscape during new construction or site development. Landscape trees on residential and commercial properties contribute significantly to the aesthetic, functional and monetary values of the site. Unfortunately, these trees are often damaged so severely during construction that many decline and die within a few years. Sam Hill Tree Care can outline a specific tree preservation program to protect your trees from harmful construction practices that can damage the roots, trunk or limbs of your beautiful trees.

Oak Wilt Management

Sam Hill Tree Care consultant and diagnostician, Sam Hill, is well-educated in the treatment protocols and preventative measures necessary to avoid this deadly disease of oaks. Pruning oaks during the winter can minimize the spread of the disease. Oaks should not be pruned between February 15th and June 15th. Insects that may carry the disease form infected trees to fresh pruning cuts during the spring and early summer are not present during the winter. Treatments are available for preventative and curative measures.

Organic Programs

Organic treatment is a natural program that creates and maintains a natural balance of organic materials: minerals, water, air and living organisms to help make your environment healthier. Organic fertilization and pest control options are available from Sam Hill Tree Care. Our arborists are trained to provide and explain both traditional and organic programs and help you select the best option for your specific needs.
